From Australia to Manchester: A Secret Proposal at the Albert Hall

There is a unique kind of magic that comes with being a wedding violinist. I get to witness some of the most intimate moments of a couple’s life, but every so often, a project comes along that feels like it’s been lifted straight from a movie script.

A few months ago, I received an inquiry that immediately caught my heart. A lovely woman living in Australia reached out with a grand plan: she wanted to propose to her English girlfriend in a place that held deep historical meaning for them both—Manchester.

Planning Across the Globe

Planning a surprise from the other side of the world is no small feat! Over the following months, we shared numerous emails and video calls. Despite the time difference, her excitement was infectious. We discussed the perfect timing, the logistics of the venue, and most importantly, the soundtrack that would define their "forever" moment.

The Venue: Manchester’s Crown Jewel

The choice of venue was the magnificent Albert Hall. If you’ve ever been inside, you know it is one of the most atmospheric spaces in the UK. Originally built as a Methodist Central Hall, its ornate ceilings, massive organ pipes, and spectacular stained glass create a sense of hallowed grandness.

I arrived early to set up in the upper tier, tucked away by a stunning stained-glass window that bathed the room in a soft, ethereal light. With the champagne chilled and the videographer hidden and ready, the silence of the vast, empty hall was thick with anticipation.

The Sound of "Yes"

As the doors opened and the couple walked into the center of the hall, the first notes of "Malibu" by Miley Cyrus—their song—began to ring out.

The acoustics of the Albert Hall are legendary. As a violinist, playing in a space like that is a dream; the sound carries with a richness and warmth that you just can't find elsewhere. Seeing the look of pure shock and joy on her girlfriend's face as she realized what was happening (and heard "their" song) is a memory I will carry with me for a long time.

An Epic Celebration

Once the "Yes" was official and the ring was on, we kept the celebration going with a curated setlist that echoed through the rafters:

  • "Simply The Best" (Noah Reid style): A tender, stripped-back version that felt so right for the moment.

  • "Rain on Me" by Lady Gaga: To bring a bit of upbeat energy to the champagne toast!

  • "Defying Gravity" from Wicked: This was the finale, and in that massive hall, it felt absolutely epic. The soaring melody was the perfect way to cap off such a monumental occasion.

Why I Love What I Do

This day was a beautiful reminder of why I chose this career. Beyond the music, it’s about the connection. To be the one providing the "soundtrack" to a couple's history is a responsibility I don't take lightly.

To the happy couple: thank you for letting me be a part of your Manchester story. Whether you're in the UK or halfway across the world in Australia, may your life together be as harmonious as those final notes in the Albert Hall.
